Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals

Founded in 2002, the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals is a coalition of more than 150 animal rescue groups and shelters in New York City. The organization’s primary goal is to transform NYC into a no-kill community by 2015. In order to achieve this goal, the Alliance helps its Alliance Participating Organizations (APOs) work to their highest potential to increase pet adoptions and spay/neuter rates. Key Initiatives 1. The Picasso Veterinary Fund pays for lifesaving medical treatment for sick and injured animals transferred from Animal Care & Control of NYC (AC&C) to other APOs for adoption. 2. Wheels of Hope transports dogs and cats from Animal Care & Control of NYC to other APOs. Since the van hit the road in 2005, more than 25,000 dogs, cats and other animals have been transported on the next leg of their journey to permanent new homes. 3. The New York City Feral Cat Initiative’s mission is to solve the feral cat overpopulation crisis in NYC through the humane, non-lethal method of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). more…

Straight But Not Narrow

go to

Straight But Not Narrow (SBNN) is a 501c3 nonprofit primarily focused on reaching out to straight youth and young adults to improve the perception of, and behavior towards, LGBT youth. Over the past few years there have been a number of great campaigns and charities that have emerged to show support for gay youth and teens. However, SBNN noticed something significant missing: the message to the young, straight male. It is an unfortunate reality that most bullying and harassment that gay teens face comes from this group. And, it is for this reason that SBNN has built a campaign that is primarily directed at positively influencing their views on LGBT youth. Because let’s face it, whether you’re gay, straight, or somewhere in between, it doesn’t matter…just be you! more…

It Gets Better Project

go to

The It Gets Better Project (IGBP) is a 501c3 nonprofit that was created to show young LGBT people the levels of happiness, potential, and positivity their lives will reach – if they can just get through their teen years. The It Gets Better Project wants to remind teenagers in the LGBT community that they are not alone — and it WILL get better. History of the It Gets Better Project In September 2010, syndicated columnist and author Dan Savage created a YouTube video with his partner Terry Miller to inspire hope for young people facing harassment. In response to a number of students taking their own lives after being bullied in school, they wanted to create a personal way for supporters everywhere to tell LGBT youth that, yes, it does indeed get better. The It Gets Better Project has become a worldwide movement, inspiring more than 40,000 user-created videos viewed more than 40 million times. To date, the project has received submissions from celebrities, organizations, activists, politicians and media personalities, including President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Adam Lambert, Anne Hathaway, Colin Farrell, Matthew Morrison of "Glee", Joe Jonas, Joel Madden, Ke$ha, Sarah Silverman, Tim Gunn, Ellen DeGeneres, Suze Orman, the staffs of The Gap, Google, Facebook, Pixar, the Broadway community, and many more. Every video changes a life. It doesn’t matter who makes it. more…
