Ken-Mar Rescue

Ken-Mar Rescue is a 501(c)(3) animal welfare organization dedicated to saving and finding forever homes for dogs in the Los Angeles area. Founded in 2007 by Ken Guild and Martie Petrie, Ken-Mar Rescue has already saved hundreds of dogs from euthanasia. The Story Of How Ken-Mar Rescue Came To Be In 2007 Martie lost her sweet, but deaf Pomeranian, Moxie. To get her back, Martie tried posting “lost dog” signs, speaking with members of the community, and calling anyone she thought could be of help. It wasn’t until Martie spoke to the owner of a local, holistic pet store, that she caught a break in her search for Moxie. The owner recommended that Martie immediately visit a shelter in the area – and so she did. Sadly, when Martie reached the shelter, she saw some major issues. Not only was the staff unfriendly, but there were dozens of collared dogs in the shelter crates – and no one was attempting to find their owners. For hours Martie went from cage to cage looking for her precious dog, and eventually a volunteer reunited Martie and Moxie. Thank goodness Martie got there when she did, as Moxie had been labeled “defective” because of her deafness and was slated for euthanization. Finding Moxie gave Martie a cause to be passionate about. She immediately signed up as a volunteer at a local shelter, and discovered that hundreds of dogs are killed each week. Saddened and disgusted by the reality she was witnessing, Martie convinced her partner Ken that they could create an organization to help find homes for dogs that would otherwise be euthanized. From this, Ken-Mar Rescue was born. more…

Rococco-LA by Zlatka Paneva

Zlatka Paneva is an artist and designer from Los Angeles. She has worked in numerous media and her paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics and jewelry can be found in fine stores, museums and private collections in Europe, Asia and the U.S. Her art is a cocktail of reality, sources and imagination, infused with elegance and a sense of humor. Zlatka, what was your inspiration for the "Ken-Mar Rescue" shirt? Simply, the design represents how powerful love can be in the life of a homeless animal. I really believe that Love Carries All! Why do you love being an artist? I love expressing myself in images and color. Can you describe the process you went through creating the t-shirt design? I just wanted to use as much love and compassion as possible while creating the design. I have so much respect for what Ken-Mar Rescue is doing and I'm thankful that my art can help their cause. more…

Straight But Not Narrow

go to

Straight But Not Narrow (SBNN) is a 501c3 nonprofit primarily focused on reaching out to straight youth and young adults to improve the perception of, and behavior towards, LGBT youth. Over the past few years there have been a number of great campaigns and charities that have emerged to show support for gay youth and teens. However, SBNN noticed something significant missing: the message to the young, straight male. It is an unfortunate reality that most bullying and harassment that gay teens face comes from this group. And, it is for this reason that SBNN has built a campaign that is primarily directed at positively influencing their views on LGBT youth. Because let’s face it, whether you’re gay, straight, or somewhere in between, it doesn’t matter…just be you! more…

It Gets Better Project

go to

The It Gets Better Project (IGBP) is a 501c3 nonprofit that was created to show young LGBT people the levels of happiness, potential, and positivity their lives will reach – if they can just get through their teen years. The It Gets Better Project wants to remind teenagers in the LGBT community that they are not alone — and it WILL get better. History of the It Gets Better Project In September 2010, syndicated columnist and author Dan Savage created a YouTube video with his partner Terry Miller to inspire hope for young people facing harassment. In response to a number of students taking their own lives after being bullied in school, they wanted to create a personal way for supporters everywhere to tell LGBT youth that, yes, it does indeed get better. The It Gets Better Project has become a worldwide movement, inspiring more than 40,000 user-created videos viewed more than 40 million times. To date, the project has received submissions from celebrities, organizations, activists, politicians and media personalities, including President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Adam Lambert, Anne Hathaway, Colin Farrell, Matthew Morrison of "Glee", Joe Jonas, Joel Madden, Ke$ha, Sarah Silverman, Tim Gunn, Ellen DeGeneres, Suze Orman, the staffs of The Gap, Google, Facebook, Pixar, the Broadway community, and many more. Every video changes a life. It doesn’t matter who makes it. more…
